We apparently can learn something from the birds and the bees when it comes to human sexuality: new research shows that, just like humans, stressed-out birds are more likely to cheat on their partners. Scientists used to think that the majority of birds were monogamous, but we now know that most "cheat" on their "spouses" and that global warming exacerbates the trend: researchers found that females in unstable climates lay more eggs that lack their spouse's DNA and swap mates more often between breeding. We're used to paranoia about social networking sites like Facebook gleaning personal information from our "Likes" and "Shares," but this fascinating NYT Magazine piece gives us a look into how companies like Target have been intensely profiling their customers for decades. It's a fine line: if companies go too far snooping on their customers, they risk turning them off, but if they get it right, they make billions. And that possibility is so enticing that almost every major retailer, including investment banks and the U.S. Postal service, has a "predictive analytics" department that employs people like Target statistician Andrew Pole, the focus of the piece, whose job it is to figure out how to sell customers items they don't even know they need without creeping them out. Well, Occupy Wall Street's much-hyped protest outside the Calvin Klein show yesterday was a bust. Only five protesters turned up. "We had a bus load of people coming down from Albany, but something happened to the bus," said #OWS spokesperson Jason Stone-Diaz. Though they claimed to have reinforcements inside — "We have 15 activists inside the show and they're going to do something, but we're not sure what" — both the 2 p.m. show and the 3 p.m. show came off without a hitch. The protesters' claims, as reported in the press, were vague; mention was made of the fashion industry's "unemployment problem" and the fact that fashion shows celebrate "riches beyond belief." Strangely, nobody thought to draw attention to Calvin Klein's long history of mono-ethnic runway shows; this season, as per usual, Calvin gave 32 out of its 33 runway looks to white models, making it one of the whitest shows at New York fashion week. This week, the Virginia House passed a particularly ugly bit of legislation that would require women seeking a first-trimester abortion in the state to undergo a vaginal ultrasound for no medical reason. Many women are upset because by most definitions, forcing a woman to have something put inside her vagina against her will and for no reason is, uh, rape. Cunningham, who is in his mid-80s, was reportedly uninjured, and continued shooting. Today on Capitol Hill, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform assembled a panel to discuss the birth control mandate in President Obama's Affordable Care Act. Specifically, whether or not requiring insurers to cover birth control violates religious freedom of people who don't believe in science. The committee, chaired by a male, consisted of eight men who felt personally persecuted by the requirement. And that's about the least depressing aspect of the whole circus. More »

It's no secret that a lot of us get a little tingly in our magic area for Daniel Radcliffe now that he's come of age and it's totally acceptable to lust after him. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been dogged by a story from 1983 that continues to hound him to this day: while on a family vacation to Canada, Mittens strapped the family dog to the roof of the car in a container and drove off. For 12 hours. The dog shat himself in fear en route, all over the car. The Romneys have reported that their Irish Setter lived to a "ripe old age" after the incident, but now it seems that the pup may have run away once the family got to Canada. More »

Courtney Love has gone on the attack after a new e-book, Courtney Comes Clean, charged that her hoarding habits were responsible for the death of her daughter Frances Bean Cobain's cat. The cat killing allegations arose during the time that Frances was obtaining a restraining order against her, and the e-book relied on some of the documents presented in support of the order. Council of Fashion Designers of America chief executive Steven Kolb says he is "disappointed" that Ford models reneged on its pledge to not put girls under 16 forward for runway work. He says that although the CFDA would "of course not" punish any designer member who used underaged models in a show, but that the organization does give designers a little talking-to. He thought he was on vacation from all the usual battling that goes on in the Supreme Court, but little did Justice Stephen Breyer know, he was in for a much bigger fight. He and his wife, along with two other guests, were in their vacation home on the Caribbean island of Nevis last week when an intruder came in with a machete. The man ended up stealing $1,000 in cash before fleeing the scene. No one has been arrested, and it's not yet clear whether the robber knew who Breyer was. Supreme Court Justices are offered protection by the U.S. Marshals Service when they travel, but there is no comment on whether there was a marshal anywhere nearby when this happened. Thank goodness nobody was hurt, and that dumb bandit better hope he never gets caught because you can bet the full force of the law is going to be smacked down upon him. More »
