Forbes 2014 Billionaire List Has a Record-Breaking Number of Women

Latest

Out of 1,645 billionaires that made the list, 172 of them are women, up from last year’s 138.

Once again, this group is dominated by the Walton family — Christy (worth $36.7 billion) and Alice ($34.3 billion) — and L’Oreal’s Liliane Bettencourt ($34.5 billion). The interesting part is of the 268 newcomers to the list, 42 of them were women. Only five of them however, including Sheryl Sandberg and Folorunsho Alakija, Nigeria’s first female billionaire, are self-made. Despite the overall increase, women still make up around 10% of the billionaire list.
