In an effort to elucidate at least part of the vaguest sexual assault story ever, a representative from the Rhodes Trust issued a statement to the New York Times in which he confirms that the Trust suspended Yale quarterback Patrick J. Witt's candidacy after learning of the sexual assault charges filed against him by a fellow student. The Trust had informed Yale on Nov. 4 that Witt's candidacy would be dropped unless the school endorsed him by Nov. 15. When Yale still hadn't endorsed Witt by Nov. 13, Witt made the announcement that he was foregoing his prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and all quad-walking privileges that come with it so that he could play school hero in the Harvard-Yale game (Yale lost anyway). Witt, who at 22 is eligible and being groomed like a prized English setter for the NFL draft, insists that he made the decision to play in the Harvard-Yale game independently from the Rhodes Trust's decision. Joe Paterno, former football coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, died this morning shortly after 10 am ET in State College, PA after experiencing serious complications from his lung cancer treatment. Paterno's 46-season, two national championship legacy was tarnished in November with allegations that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had molested children during Paterno's tenure. Paterno had recently told The Washington Post that he was overwhelmed by the scandal and didn't "want to do something to jeopardize what the university procedure was." One of the most beloved college coaches of all time, Paterno's legacy had been untarnished before the Sandusky scandal, marked not only by a high winning percentage, but a high graduation rate that topped out at 85% in 2009. An Alabama football fan and his errant ballsack rose to notoriety this month when a video of the man using the sack to teabag a passed out LSU fan's neck made the internet rounds. It's no longer possible to blame Jessica Simpson for Tony Romo's troubles on the field, so the Wall Street Journal has come up with an alternate theory: Perhaps cheerleaders are jinxing teams in the NFL. Six teams, the Bears, Browns, Giants, Lions, Packers and Steelers, don't have cheerleaders, and Jared Diamond jokingly suggests that this may be the key to their success. Allegations that former Penn State Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky victimized eight young boys for more than a decade while university officials turned a blind eye have been met with widespread public outrage. No one in a position of any consequence is defending the actions of Sandusky. Three top university officials, including the University President, have been compelled to step down. Legendary football head coach Joe Paterno announced today that this will be his last season along the Nittany Lions' sidelines. Believing en masse that what happened is totally and completely fucked up and calling for the heads of those involved is the appropriate reaction to child abuse. This has been a weekend of complicated emotions for fans of Penn State's Nittany Lions football team. On one hand, they're number 1 in this week's Big Ten Power Rankings and have an impressive 8-1 record; it's possible the team could be headed to the Rose Bowl.
