I've probably seen Woody Allen's 1977 Annie Hall over 100 times. It's a movie I often use as a litmus test with people as to whether or not they'd be able to handle my slightly darker views on people, relationships and life. Like most of Woody Allen's early films, it answers questions about the universe and our roles within it and faces the bleak emptiness of human existence, and it laughs in its face, through shivers and tears. A truly beautiful movie, his first love story, "[he] took a risk; he let the audience feel the sadness of goodbye in a funny movie," as Ms. Keaton says in her book. More »

Last week, the trailer for Angelina Jolie's film, In The Land Of Blood & Honey, hit YouTube, only to be yanked down within hours. Proenza Schouler had Harmony Korine make this new short, entitled Snowballs, for the brand. "I don't know if anyone can make a crystal meth trailer park seem chic," said Vogue's Lauren Santo Domingo at the Paris premiere party. The clip features clothing from Proenza Schouler's fall collection, which was inspired by a trip designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough took through the American West and Southwest. "We spent time in Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico exploring Native American history and their crafts and were inspired by Navajo textiles," explained Hernandez when he testified before Congress in support of a bill earlier this year. "When you look at our designs you won't see knockoffs of Navajo crafts. Instead you will see that we incorporated their feel and some of their elements to create our own originals." The campaign to free the West Memphis Three, the men convicted of the 1993 murder of three 8-year-old boys in Arkansas, drew a lot of support from Hollywood, so perhaps it isn't surprising that in the next year or so we'll see not one, but two new films about their case. With the recent smashing success of Bridesmaids, much has been made about women in film. Supposedly, this one comedy proved once and for all that  1) People with uteruses can be funny 2) Female-fronted films need not be pandering 3) Men will actually pay to see movies with female leads, and 4) Carrots can be sexy. Now as much as I love Bridemaids and have steadily reveled in its worldwide success, I'm more realistic about its impact on the standing of women in Hollywood and as moviegoers. It's just too soon to declare women have won the war against pandering, sexist and misogynistic movies that are theoretically aimed to entertain us. (Even though the surprisingly big opening of The Help is cause for optimism.) Now, I won't bore you with the crushing statistics of the success rates of female filmmakers versus male filmmakers, or point out the dishearteningly wide discrepancy between the number of films with male leads versus female leads. Instead, I'd like to talk about the film genre most often targeted at women: romance. Because Bechdel test be damned, the romance genre is essentially synonymous with the dismissive "chick flick" moniker. Earlier this week, it was announced that Newsies, that fixture in your VCR when you were 12 (or, uh, your DVD player when you were a freshman in college and discovering that vodka makes you storm out of parties and then nostalgic) will be returning as a play opening a Millburn, New Jersey theater's 2011 season, baffling some of the minds behind the original film. At first release, it was widely panned by critics, and I'm sure that today, many fans of theater will disagree with this next statement: Newsies is one of the greatest films of all time. Sure, it gets a little draggy toward the end, and sure the romantic subplot seems tacked on, and yes, some of the so-called teenage boys are inappropriately attractive, but the wisdom of Newsies is timeless and unstoppable.
