Emergency: We're Running Out of Prosecco

Latest

First the rosé, now this: USA Today reports that we’re likely to see a prosecco shortage, due to a combination of bad weather and increased demand.

Were you or your mother planning on ordering a nice glass of prosecco with breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner this weekend? “Why not?!” you would have giggled. “It’s a holiday!” your mom would have exclaimed. Well, that is just too dang bad, because the world you woke up to today is a far darker and less bubbly place than you could have ever imagined.

According to Roberto Cremonese, the export manager of prosecco manufacturer Bisol:

“Last year’s harvest was very poor, and down by up to 50% in some parts, so there is a very real possibility of a global shortage…A lot of the vines in the DOC area are newly planted and they ended up soaked – the grapes were rotten and yields were down by half in some cases.”

Prosecco sales have also been soaring, with a 38% increase in exports to the U.S. in 2014.

It’s a Memorial Day calamity.
