In an interview with The Sunday Times, Elijah Wood “said that organized sexual abuse of children in Hollywood is rife.” Wood, now 35, did not claim to be a victim of abuse while beginning his career as a child actor, but shared that “many of his peers were regularly ‘preyed upon’” at parties his mother prevented him from attending.

The actor said he felt that such crimes continue to be unpunished because the victims “can’t speak as loudly as people in power”. “That’s the tragedy of attempting to reveal what is happening to innocent people. They can be squashed, but their lives have been irreparably damaged.”

Wood then compared the powerful abusers in Hollywood to the late Jimmy Savile, a popular English entertainer who allegedly abused around 300 children over sixty years. “Jesus, it must have been devastating,” Wood said of the Seville story. “Clearly something major was going on in Hollywood. It was all organized. There are a lot of vipers in this industry – people who only have their own interests in mind.”

“There is darkness in the underbelly. If you can imagine it, it’s probably happened,” he said.

Former child star Cory Feldman once called pedophilia “Hollywood’s biggest problem.”
