Swimming With Dolphins Probably Does Not Cure Diseases

Dolphin therapy programs claim that swimming with the sea mammals can cure conditions from chronic fatigue syndrome to autism. However, aside from a few small studies suggesting that dolphin fun may help with depression and, oddly, eczema, there's no evidence for these claims. Also, as much as dolphins may like playing around with other creatures, they "don't feel any spiritual imperative to heal humans, as far as anyone knows." Woman Injured By Dolphin Jumping Into Her Boat

Tourists on a Florida dolphin-watching cruise got more than their money's worth when a 600-pound dolphin jumped onto the deck of their 24-foot boat. The dolphin mistimed its jump and wound up hitting a woman on board, spraining her ankle. The group called 911 and members of the Isles of Capri Fire and Rescue Department quickly released the uninjured animal back into the water. "He wasn't doing anything to us. He wasn't moving," said Lt. Kieth Perry. "It was almost like he knew he was stuck and that he had to rely on us to get out." More »

I don't really keep up on New Age-y type stuff because it's just not my thing. So the most recent episode of Showtime's Penn & Teller: Bullshit, was a bit of a surprise. The episode featured people engaging in a dolphin-assisted water birthing method, which is said to be very relaxing for the mother and child... even in the middle of the deep ocean. (Aren't babies really slippery when they come out? Especially in water?) As Penn & Teller point out, it's totally unclear as to how the dolphins really help in the birthing process, other than just swimming around. But the dread-locked hippies seen in the clip above firmly believe that the dolphins will come in handy should any complications arise during delivery. More »

Twenty-six dolphins died this week in an apparent mass suicide attempt in England, while others were led back out to sea by volunteers. A zoological pathologist examining the animals has determined that "The dolphins had swallowed and inhaled big chunks of mud from the estuary. Their lungs and stomachs were full of it." While there is no explanation yet for the mass killing, some have suggested it was due to Royal Navy submarine exercises in the area, a killer whale or infection.
