Bravo has given the greenlight to a new show, Love Broker, in which two best friends — one a real estate agent, and one a matchmaker — set up male clients in New York City. It's not exactly "sign here and get an apartment and a girlfriend," but every now and then, it does happen: "Sometimes, after selling an apartment, we sign [the buyer] up to find their [life] partners," Love Broker's Jennifer Zucher says. The truth is, I suspect a lot of people wouldn't mind outsourcing this kind of stuff: Way way back in the day, we had limited choices in terms of living spaces — this cave or that one — and either you just hooked up with whomever wasn't your brother, or the elders told you where to live and who to hang with. Now we're so busy and the world is so big it's hard to figure all this shit out. Plus, real estate can be a major factor in love lives: Some people won't date other people based on their neighborhood/borough/commute time. While the idea of accidentally hooking up with one's cousin is quite disturbing, it's a real possibility when you live in a place like Iceland that only has 300,000 people to choose from. That's why there's a new website called Íslendingabók, aka the Book of Icelanders. It sounds like a cooler version of Facebook, but it's actually a genealogy registry that keeps track of a whopping 1,200 years worth of people and tells you if you're related to someone. It sounds like a must-check before any first date—because the only thing worse than dating your cousin is having to dump your cousin. Members of the scientific community have marveled for years at the Australian bowerbird's elaborate courtship ritual, in which the male bowerbird builds an elaborate edifice of a twig canopy arching over an avenue (called a "gesso") of stones, bones, and shells in order to impress on a female bowerbird that he is dexterous and, therefore, a good lay. Female bowerbirds are attracted to the biggest structures containing the shiniest pebbles, — a fact that ornithologists seem to find hilarious — but research has revealed that males have employed an optical illusion in order to avoid the hard work of finding and arranging paving material for their avenues. Using a forced perspective trick that even medieval painters couldn't quite figure out, male bowerbirds arrange stones at the avenue's entrance from smallest to largest, thus making it appear more like a Champs-Elysees and less like a seedy alley in Perth (Perth, I'm sure, is a wonderful city).
