If there was a Bush administration official who was as painful to listen to as Bush himself — and that is probably scientifically impossible but humor us for a second — it was Scott McClellan. Dana Perino is dumb but so prettily, unabashedly so, Victoria Clarke always had those insane purple suits, Rumsfeld made his ruthless philosophies on statecraft into a hypnotic C-Span smugfest, Tony Snow even had a sense of humor. But when McClellan got the job, the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz described him as "soft-spoken, self-deprecating and so cautious that he [made] Ari Fleischer sound like a gangsta rapper." And now he's out with a tell-all (called, appealingly, What Happened?) (my punctuation) that apparently sounds like the ravings of "a left-wing blogger!" Hey Scott, welcome to the crew! Remember Bush Administration spokespretty Dana Perino and that tough time she had remembering just what the Cuban missile crisis was? Well the other day she had another little missile crisis on Fox News Sunday, which is to say, she explained, she doesn't really know what a missile is sorta, because, um, totes, kthanxbai, she was born a girl. "Some of the terms I just don't know," she explained. "I haven't grown up knowing. The type of missiles that are out there: patriots and scuds and cruise missiles and tomahawk missiles. And I think that men just by osmosis understand all of these things, and they're things that I really have to work at — to know the difference between a carrier and a destroyer, and what it means when one of those is being launched to a certain area." Um, yeah, like if you launch a destroyer from a Tomahawk off the coast of Pakistan, could it even reach far enough to spray California with nerve gas? UPI reporter and longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas got into it the other day with WH spokeswoman Dana Perino. As you'll see in the clip here, Ms. Thomas hammered Perino over the situation in Iraq, and Dana dealt with Thomas the only way an Administration-funded, icy blonde knows how: With curt condescension. The least detestable member of the Bush Administration has cancer, and there is nothing funny you can say about that, so you have to focus on postiive things, like how pretty this new lady is compared to the last big Bush admin spokeswoman with the purple tweed power suits and Billy Idol hair, right?
