Gaultier Couture is One Big Tribute to Amy Winehouse

Jean Paul Gaultier's latest couture collection was, says the designer, inspired by Amy Winehouse. Models sported drawn-on versions of Winehouse's beauty spot, signature winged eyeliner, and beehive hair. And Gaultier's collection shows the influence of some of the late singer's style, given her propensity for pencil skirts, preppy-looking colors, wide belts, and other Rockabilly-type touches (although sadly none of Gaultier's models wore ballet flats, another sartorial choice Winehouse was known for). Dior's First Couture Show Without John Galliano Was A Total Mess

After fifteen years at Christian Dior, John Galliano was fired for inveterate alcoholism and being rather racist this spring. While Galliano fights a court case, Dior has dragged its feet in replacing him. So the brand went ahead with a couture show in Paris yesterday without a new designer. The pieces in the collection ranged from brightly colored to very sparkly to extremely ruffled, with no apparent theme. Something about "roses" was mentioned. (Galliano did a rather spectacular couture collection based on flowers one year ago.) And something about "modern architecture." (I really can see the influence of Saarinen in that twirly-candystripe skirt...not.) It was, in short, a mess. And the critics hated it. More »

On last night's episode, posing instructor Benny Ninja (why doesn't he have an official title like "Diva Runway Coach Extraordinaire" or "Noted Fashion Photographer"?) taught the girls about commercial, couture and catalog modeling. Many of them couldn't seem to tell the difference between the three, and frankly, neither could I. I know that couture is "weird", and commercial and catalog seemed identical to me, other than the fact that one of them seems to involve checking the time on an invisible watch. Oh, the other awesome thing last night was when Dominique accused Whitney of being racist. (Note to Dominique: Just because someone is a bitch to a person of color, it doesn't count as racist sentiment unless the remark is actually racial.) So what did the totally not retiring Valentino churn out for his greatly-anticipated (and greatly-feted) 45th anniversary collection? Amazingly classic Valentino looks. And this is a good thing. To be creating a distinctly feminine and glamorous look for 45 years without ever falling victim to the times is quite the accomplishment, and this collection in particular is just the icing on the cake.
