"@missbananafish: My dad has vitiligo, and talked to me about it as a child both so I could undersatnd his hands (we are Jewish, white, but he has a fairly dark olive skintone and his fingers are completely colorless, stark white, down to about half of their backs) and the patches on his face, and then again after the 1993 Oprah interview in which MJ (at the time my obsession) talked about having it as well. Basically, there are 3 kinds of vitiligo: assymetrical vitiligo (which is what my dad has and is the most prevalent kind of vitiligo) in which patches of skin depigment at random, but most commontly around body orifices (mouth, nose, genitals, etc.) and on extremities (fingers/hands, toes/fingers); symmentrical vitiligo, which behaves like the assymentrical kind except the patches depigment symmetrically; and vitiligo universal, in which the entire body depigments."
