In an effort to elucidate at least part of the vaguest sexual assault story ever, a representative from the Rhodes Trust issued a statement to the New York Times in which he confirms that the Trust suspended Yale quarterback Patrick J. Witt's candidacy after learning of the sexual assault charges filed against him by a fellow student. The Trust had informed Yale on Nov. 4 that Witt's candidacy would be dropped unless the school endorsed him by Nov. 15. When Yale still hadn't endorsed Witt by Nov. 13, Witt made the announcement that he was foregoing his prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and all quad-walking privileges that come with it so that he could play school hero in the Harvard-Yale game (Yale lost anyway). Witt, who at 22 is eligible and being groomed like a prized English setter for the NFL draft, insists that he made the decision to play in the Harvard-Yale game independently from the Rhodes Trust's decision. Students at Tulane University say the uptown New Orleans neighborhood that cradles their campus has become so treacherous a gauntlet of violent crime that they're afraid to travel to and from school and are calling on university president Scott Cowen to devote more resources to ensuring their off-campus safety.  Some, like Vice President of Student Organizations Sam Stone in his letter to the editor of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, have even claimed that off-campus crime is only getting worse, that "aggravated burglary at night" and "daytime armed carjackings" have escalated to the "forcible rape" of female students in the off-campus area around Tulane.  But, in a city that had the highest murder rate per capita in 2010, where, for every 100,000 residents, 262 are assaulted with a gun, should New Orleans police prioritize crimes in the university neighborhoods, and how much can the university itself do to protect students who choose to commute from off-campus residences? In December, Yale students proposed a program for Sex Week 2012 that addressed some of the concerns about Sex Weeks past — including the criticism that it was too porn-focused. Now, the Sex Week organizers have let us know that the university has accepted their proposal — Sex Week 2012 is officially scheduled for Feb. 4-14. The keynote speaker will be Ann Olivarius, a Yale Law and School of Management grad, Rhodes Scholar, and now partner in a corporate law firm. Olivarius was also a plaintiff in Alexander v. Yale, the case that led to the establishment of a sexual harassment grievance system at Yale. That case was an inspiration for Yale students' current Title IX complaint against the university (they say the school failed to fix its sexist campus environment), so the choice of Olivarius is a pretty significant one. She'll be talking about "sexual education and discourse as a means to prevent sexual violence." More »

When Yale University introduced gender neutral housing for seniors, it was an experiment to see what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real, and also a test to see whether male/female cohabitation might work for the general student population. Today in an incident that brought up horrible memories of the 2007 massacre on Virginia Tech's campus aside from being horrible in its own right, two people were shot and killed at the university. The school was put on lockdown for four hours this afternoon, which was particularly rattling for students, faculty, and staff who were on campus four years ago.
