Maybe you're too bummed to bother with the Grammys tonight and it just so happens to be raining right now where you live, in which case you can log onto the magical Netflix instant watch and watch either Waiting to Exhale or the made-for-TV Cheetah Girls movies that Whitney Houston produced with Disney. If it's not raining or you're holding out for another of Whitney Houston's fine forays into cinema, you'll either have to wait patiently by the mailbox, log onto Amazon Prime, or bide your time until VH1 starts playing The Bodyguard on a loop. Even though her starring vehicles were pretty heavily criticized, all of Whitney Houston's movies were financially successful because she's extremely likable and engaging. As a producer, she seemed especially focused on making movies such as The Princess Diaries and the Brandy Cinderella that feature strong female protagonists who grow up to be royalty or famous singers, which in America means essentially the same thing. Not a bad legacy. "Cinderella, Snow White, Tinkerbell and other fictional fixtures of modern-day childhood were handcuffed, frisked and loaded into police vans Thursday at the culmination of a labor protest that brought a touch of reality to the Happiest Place on Earth," reports CNN. Sounds funny, but the costumes were actually a great way for workers to call attention to their plight. Maids, bell hops, cooks and dishwashers from three Disney-owned hotels claim that Disney's latest proposal makes health care unaffordable for hundreds of employees and creates an unfair two-tier wage system. Also, Disney allegedly wants to create a new category of part-time employees who would receive greatly reduced benefits. First they branded our produce, now the evil Disney overlords are coming to brand our lifestyles. According to an article in the new issue of Newsweek, adult women are a big part of Disney's $4 billion "Princess" industry of apparel, which already includes tiaras, jewelry, princess-inspired gowns, and forthcoming princess sleepwear and household furnishings. Take Lindsay Timberman. The 29-year-old is planning Belle from Beauty and the Beast-inspired nuptials, replete with the film's signature bloom, a "buttercup yellow" gown mimicking Belle's dress, and she's even looking for glass slippers. Disney's dresses run for $1,100; according to Disney apparel designer Jim Calhoun, the gowns are "designed to appeal to the working- and middle-class woman interested in 'trading up.'" Says Timberman: "Our first trip to Disney World, I was having my picture taken with Cinderella. She asked me if I had a prince with me, and I said, 'I do!'" More »
