Chanel's Fall-Winter Show Took Place in a High-Fashion Supermarket

Latest

Having just shown a couture collection in which the only footwear option was formal sneakers, it seems that Karl Lagerfeld is still devoted to provocatively (?) mixing the aspirational and the mundane. To wit: this presentation — which also heavily featured Fashion Sneakers, some of which were knee high — was presented in a massive Chanel-themed supermarket.

The rows and rows of shelves were stocked with Chanel-themed food goods (all of which were distributed to charities after the show, don’t worry) as well as some Chanel-themed hardware, including Chanel doormats, Chanel spades and gold-bladed Chanel chainsaws. “After [last season’s] art show, I said, ‘What can we do worse, something [more about] today?'” Lagerfeld said to WWD. “The supermarket is a thing of today’s life. Even the woman who wears expensive clothing goes to the supermarket, but she shouldn’t go in stilettos.”

He certainly took that inspiration seriously: among the more traditional Chanel-eque touches (tweed suits, luxurious fabrics, gorgeous coats and knitwear), one could find some looks that seem almost track-suit inspired, shopping baskets crafted from the house chain-link, more relaxed cuts and pop art prints.

Here’s the collection, with some additional photos of models pretending to shop for food:
