MP Claire Curtis-Thomas in England wants lad mags like Maxim and Nuts to carry film-style ratings. In a report released this week, Curtis-Thomas said that these lad mags are not rated and treated the same way as porn even though she sees the magazines as being "little more than pornography." She also wants downmarket English newspapers like the Daily Sport to carry age-appropriateness ratings. Ben Todd, an editor at lad mag Zoo thinks of his magazines as a "cheeky seaside postcard" and says that if they are restricted by age because of topless photos then newspapers like the Sun that print photos of topless models should be restricted as well. Remember that Wisconsin woman arrested for overdue books? Well Mainer JoAn Karkos is also in trouble for keeping her library books, but she held onto two copies of It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex and Sexual Health for reasons other than forgetfulness. You see, Karkos didn't return the books because she thought they were obscene. According to BoingBoing, "In September, Karkos sent letters to the libraries, including checks to pay for the cost of the books. The letters said, in part, 'I have been sufficiently horrified of the illustrations and sexually graphic, amoral, abnormal contents. I will not be returning the books.'" A judge has ordered Karkos to return the books by tomorrow at 4 and pay a $100 fine, or she'll be arrested. We're feeling a Nelson Muntz-style HaHa in our heads right now. [BoingBoing] More »
