Last month police in Amherst, New York concluded their investigation into the bullying Jamey Rodemeyer suffered before he committed suicide at age 14 in September. They decided not to file charges, but now Williamsville North High School has suspended an unknown number of students. Superintendent Scott Martzloff says the students are facing "a minimum of suspensions," which means they were suspended for a week or less with the possibility of handing out longer suspensions after a hearing. The students are too young to expel, but apparently they've learned a variety of gay slurs in their brief time on the planet. One female student was already suspended in September after she put herself in the running for Most Horrible Teen on the Planet by telling friends of Jamey's sister that she was glad her brother killed himself. Whether it was James Spader in Pretty in Pink muttering the words "You're a bitch" with intense disdain or Shannen Doherty being the ultimate bitch in Heathers, bullies were an integral plot of almost every successful film about teenagers in that era. The men we appreciate now in Hollywood like John Cusack, Patrick Dempsey, and Michael J. This just in from "no shit studies" central: According to research collected from studies about bullies in six countries, children of authoritarian parents ("parents who are demanding, directive and unresponsive") are more likely to become bullies between the ages of nine to 16. On a BusinessWeek blog, Cathy Arnst writes about an editor she once had: "Whenever I made a mistake—and in the beginning I made many, many mistakes—he would stand over me in the open newsroom and scream at me, impugning my intelligence and professional skills in language I've rarely heard since.
