The final living veteran of World War I died peacefully in her sleep this weekend at the impressive age of 110. Florence Green enlisted in Britain's Royal Air Force in 1918 at the tender age of 17 and served during the final two months of the war. She would have turned 111 on February 19th. She outlived the last two surviving male veterans of WWI—Claude Choules, a Royal Navy sailor and the last WWI combatant, and Frank Buckles, the last American veteran, both of whom died last year at the age of 110. If the winter weather is getting to you, imagine how British skier Felicity Aston must have felt. She just returned today from a solo ski expedition across Antarctica. She is the first woman—and first human—to complete such a journey alone. The trip took her 59 days, during which she was powered only by her own strength. She hauled two sledges over 1,084 miles, which is not too shabby! The 34-year-old woman from Kent, England, is a veteran of subzero treks, and she used to work at a British weather service base in Antarctica. After being picked up after her expedition, she said she'd been promised "A very long, very hot shower. It's something I haven't had in quite a long time now!" Usually you hear about how dangerous drunk driving is, but it turns out riding the train drunk can also be hazardous to your health. Check out this crazy video of a heavily intoxicated woman in England who steps off a train, falls, and then somehow manages to roll underneath the train. The footage was released by British police in an effort to remind travelers not to get too drunk while celebrating this holiday season. Luckily the woman is okay — just cuts and bruises — because some alert person spotted her go down and prevented her from getting flattened. He and his colleagues think that digitally enhanced pictures of bikini-clad women in ecstatic poses should be banned in advertisements. Last week, the British Parliament called for "zero-tolerance" on sexist advertising. Their intent is to encourage the industry to improve. According to their report, stereotypes in advertising can "straitjacket women, men, girls and boys by restricting individuals to predetermined and artificial roles that are often degrading, humiliating and dumbed down for both sexes." Right now there is no intention to ban sexist images — it's more of a suggestion, for advertisers to self-regulate. But, as Salon's Tracy-Clark Flory points out, "A ban would require arriving at an agreed-upon definition of sexist imagery, and good luck with that." But what if a ban passed? What would be banned? Ads like the Dolce & Gabbana spread shown? Wouldn't that just garner them more attention, more cachet? And the International Herald Tribune mentions Mr. Clean. He's sexist!
