Up The River

Mother Jones brings us a breakdown of the tasks farmed out to America's prisoners. It's not just stamping license plates, anymore! In addition to packing meat, aiding the war effort via Unicor and shrink-wrapping software, inmates pay their debts to society by sewing Victoria's Secret lingerie. Perhaps most perverse, Texas prisoners are required to make supplies for prison guards and cells. And get this: "In 1994, a contractor for GOP congressional hopeful Jack Metcalf hired Washington state prisoners to call and remind voters he was pro-death penalty. Metcalf, who prevailed, said he never knew." Makes wig-sourcing seem downright humane by comparison. [Mother Jones]
