Mary has been living in filth for longer than her family can remember, and while they knew the conditions of her home were bad, they didn't know to what extent until the Hoarders cameras—along with a therapist—bravely entered the dwelling in hazmat suits. An owner of 15 cats, the house is literally covered in not only animal feces, but Mary's excrement as well, as she is incontinent and doesn't have running water in her home. The bathroom looks like someone painted every inch of surface space with runny shit and then let it crust over. During filming for this episode, Mary became violently ill from the fumes in the home and began going into respiratory failure. She had to be removed, through a window, by paramedics. Unsurprisingly, the county building inspector condemned the home. Do yourself a favor and don't eat Lean Cuisine Swedish meatballs while viewing this clip. Many Starbucks in New York are converting their public restrooms into employees-only facilities, because the public ones create long lines and are a hassle to clean. While it's hard to fault Starbucks for its unwillingness to "be the public bathroom in the city," we'll also mourn the disappearance of one of the few public places where New Yorkers could reliably pee. In a column called "Not Just a Ladies' Room," Carol Hymowitz tells the story of a colleague who was unsure whether or not she should take a promotion.
