New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor has a new book coming out this week called The Obamas, about—as you might have guessed from the title—the Obamas. For the book, which many are calling "explosive" for its revelations about the very private Obama White House, Kantor says she interviewed 33 members of Obama's staff. She seems to have a gotten a fairly deep look into the administration's inner workings, but particularly into Michelle Obama's role in the whole show. There are plenty of juicy details (for instance, did you know the Obamas threw a lavish Alice in Wonderland Tea Party during the worst of the recession but didn't tell anyone about it?), but mostly what emerges is a picture of a very smart woman struggling to adapt to her new life in the public eye—and mostly succeeding. President Obama spent part of his Christmas visiting with troops who are stationed at a Marine Corps Base in Hawaii. At one point he posed for a photo with 8-month-old Cooper Wall Wagner and his parents, Capt. Greg Wagner and Meredith Wagner. While Obama and his parents were all smiles, cute little Cooper casually reached up and jammed his chubby little hand into the President's mouth. Obama's reaction was pretty cute too, and he used the opportunity to make a joke at his own expense, saying Cooper must have been thinking, "I want some of that big nose." More »

You know what's a turnoff? Men who are picky eaters. I'm not saying it's fun in women, either, but I haven't had to live as intimately with women for a while now. So it was kind of shocking to learn that Barack Obama, our dashing president-crush-elect, is apparently rife with food neuroses. Since the campaign post-mortems started coming out last week, we've learned that the President-elect has weird aversions, hang-ups, odd pancake behaviors and a strong abstemious streak - none of which his wife, Michelle, seems to share. Bad news for Malia and Sasha Obama: They won't be getting that new puppy until after the Obamas move into the White House. In an interview with 60 Minutes last night, Barack and Michelle said that they want to be "responsible owners" and they know that it wouldn't be good to get a new dog in the middle of a major move, even though they promised Malia and Sasha a new pup after the election was over. Barack Obama's already left Berlin, but the pictures remain. The last time I personally saw the Victory Column, I was 20 and in the midst of Berlin's enormous gay pride parade. Watching young men puke in the bushes while people passed by in front of a stone column was way less impressive than seeing a 20-foot-longpaper maché penis float through the Brandenburg Gate — which makes a better backdrop for everything, really. But the Bush Administration didn't want that backdrop for Obama any more than they probably want to see large penises around Washington, so the Victory Column had to do. Does it really matter what he said? Moe and I say not really, not when we can discuss Rudy Giuliani's Lawsuit-Happy Gilmore, Matthew Yglesias's haters, Michael Savage's stupidity, power, privilege and Duke, SATs, ADHD, Dawson's Creek and James Van Der Beek.
