If you live in or are visiting New York City or its environs and you do not go see the Carsten Höller show that just opened at the New Museum, I don't want to ever see your Philistine face in here again. Okay? Okay. There's a pill-clock. And one experiential piece that employs a simple sensory illusion to make you feel like your nose is growing, and then shrinking, and then growing, and the trick is so simple but so weird that I just can't stop thinking about it. There's also a huge aquarium inset with three Plexiglass alcoves, sized just right that you can lie back, stick your head in one, and look really closely at all the fish; a bird-cage mobile filled with singing finches; and an immersion tank you can float in. But really, let's cut to the chase here: you want to do the slide. It's like a trippier, colder, faster waterpark slide, and it goes right through two floors of the museum. You catch flashes of the other artworks through the glass windows in the tube, and it bottoms out in a darkened room full of flashing white neon lights. I did it three times! The people in the flashing room clap when you finish, and how long has it been since you saw that in a museum? Just because Höller's slides are all famous — Miuccia has one in her office! — doesn't make it hack-y or in any way lame to really, really love the slide. Just do the slide. Then get back to me. This may be one of the earliest images in Western art of a woman giving birth, but that isn't the only reason it's incredible; it was found by a student who's legally blind. William Nutt of the University of Texas at Arlington found the 2,600-year-old relief on a fragment of a pot in an ancient Etruscan site near Florence, Italy. "I used dental tools and a sharpened trowel to slide along the ground. I'd run my hands along the soil, feeling and uncovering different layers," says Nutt. "The image is unique because in the classical world, we don't see a lot of birthing scenes." "Macaco Gordo" — or "The Fat Monkey" in English — is a 45-foot long, florescent-colored monkey that resides in the middle of a park in Sao Paolo, Brazil. This monkey statue is different, though, because he isn't made from bronze, stone, or even plaster of paris — he's made from 10,000 pairs of flip flops. The installation comes from the mind of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, who enlisted the help of local art students to create the sculpture. More »

Occasionally, a Lifetime movie comes along that seems almost like a real movie. The inspiration for this week's slideshow, The Watch, is one such film, a horror flick that sets itself up with all the classic horror tropes: a villain whose face you barely see, slow pacing, music that gets loud when a terrifying figure approaches from behind. It's legitimately scary at times — subtle, even — and it feels all wrong. If we wanted to watch a good movie, we'd be watching Magic Beyond Words: The J.K. Rowling Story.
