Alleged Rapist Cop Slips Up In Fake 911 Call

Latest

Yesterday a Manhattan jury heard a recording of a 911 call that prosecutors say was made by a police officer pretending to be a tourist, complaining about a homeless man sleeping in an apartment building. Officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin L. Mata have been accused of having themselves assigned to the fake call, then sexually assaulting a woman who was drunk.

In the call, a man who identifies himself as John Edwards describes the homeless man as “male white, I think,” before correcting himself to say, “white guy.” In radio calls and written reports, police commonly identify a person by sex, then race. There’s no way to track the man claiming to be Edwards, as he told the dispatcher who asked for his number, “I’m actually from Canada, so I don’t have one.” Who knew Canadians don’t use phones?
