The Australian government just approved the use of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose in wine, a chemical that can prevent crystallization and cloudiness, and also acts as a laxative. The additive has already been okayed by the European Union, but it's banned in the United States. Though, any imported wines are allowed to contain it, and consumers will have no idea because it's not listed on packaging. A representative from the Wine Institute, the trade group for California's wine industry, says, "I don't think the levels that are approved for use in wine in the EU and Australia will give that laxative effect." Well, that's encouraging — though perhaps winemakers should be turning this property into a selling point. Americans love yogurt that makes them poop, and wine is much more delicious. More »

A new study says that women who drink as little as one glass of wine a day increase their breast cancer risk by 1.2 times. Researchers believe alcohol might boost the level of hormones in the blood, increasing your chances of developing cancer, but they aren't really sure what's going on. Last spring, serving children alcoholic beverages at chain restaurants was all the rage in child endangerment, but it seems we may have a horrible new trend on our hands. For the second time in a month, a father has been arrested for putting his 9-year-old child in the driver's seat when he was too drunk to drive. First it was an inebriated father who was arrested for turning the wheel over to his 9-year-old daughter (who, to be fair, was "driving good"). Now Walter Sikkenga has been charged with felony child endangerment in Florida after admitting that he and his wife told their 9-year-old son to drive their van home because they were too sloshed. Apparently, this needs to be said: Making your child act as your chauffer isn't what beer commercials are talking about when they direct you to "drink responsibly." More »
