Apparently scientists in Montréal no longer need to put rats in a maze to conduct experiments, because they have shopping malls. Bonnie Swaine and Eva Kehayia, researchers at the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire en réadaptation du Montréal (CRIR), turned the Alexis Nihon Plaza shopping center into a "living laboratory." According to the Montreal Gazette, "Kehayia and Swaine note that 17 per cent of Quebecers deal with some kind of physical handicap (48 per cent of those over age 65), so public spaces need to be better designed to accommodate them." Rather than lecturing us on the benefits of eating vegetables and doing vigorous workouts, Margaret Ellen Moores of Newfoundland says she's reached the age of 106 thanks to eating junk food and enjoying herself. Her daughter said at her birthday party this weekend, "She loves her sweets. She never drank water in her life ... [She loves] her salt beef, the same old-time meals as ever she had … She loves her pizza and French fries now. So it's not her diet is it?" Earlier this week, a 76-year-old British woman led police on the opposite of wild car chase. In a scene that must have looked like it was playing out in slow motion, Caroline Turner, steered herself into trouble when she began driving down the wrong side of the road-into oncoming traffic! Danger! Police followed her, flashing their lights and everything, but Turner didn't seem to notice. She continued driving at between 10 and 20 miles per hour for 27 miles! Can you even imagine? Hilariously, one of the policemen eventually decided to run up alongside her car to talk to her. He knocked on the window and instructed her to pull over. Diana Nyad is attempting to swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West Florida, a 103-mile haul. She started her journey yesterday, but before she hit the ocean, she spoke with Today's Natalie Morales. Turning 60 was the catalyst that sparked Nyad into action; she says, "I started thinking, I want to feel alive and alert and awake and challenged. I want to do something that takes everything in me." This is Nyad's second attempt at swimming to Florida from Cuba — she first tried in 1978, when she was 28, but was pulled from the water after she drifted too far off-course. So far, this time, Nyad is off to a "perfect start." She sings Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin tunes with every stroke. Will age, experience and determination make this attempt successful?
