An autopsy has been performed on Colin, the orphaned baby whale who was euthanized in August by Sydney veterinarians, to the dismay of many Aussies and animal lovers. Vets from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service put the whale down when his health deteriorated six days after he appeared in Sydney Harbour. Many environmental groups were outraged and said the calf's life could have been saved. However, the autopsy revealed that Colin was suffering from acute pneumonia, emaciation, acute intestinal erosion, ulcers in his stomach and esophagus, as well as several infected shark bite wounds. "The combination of these conditions would have left it to die slowly and painfully," said Taronga Zoo spokesman Mark Williams. [The Australian]
