According to unnamed Gothamist sources, the Hunger Games trilogy was checked out more than any other books in NYC libraries in 2012 (that includes Manhattan, Staten Island, and the Bronx branches).
Here are all the top circulators for 2012 are:
DVD: Midnight in Paris
Children's DVD: Hugo
Book checked out by adults: Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
Book check out by all ages: The Hunger Games
Book checked out by kids: Fly Guy vs. the Flyswatter! by Tedd Arnold
Anyone surprised about Midnight in Paris? Man, New Yorkers love their Woody Allen. I guess it's good that somebody does? OH DAYAM. But really, he's great. The same could be said of NYC and Scorsese — I'm surprised the #1 kid's DVD isn't Yo Gabba Gabba, or the like. Sophisticated babies up in the five boroughs, apparently.
As far as number one across the board, The Hunger Games hysteria probably won't die down anytime soon. With the series' second movie coming out this year, expect more Katniss fever to descend upon the denizens of NYC (and probably everywhere else, too).
In fact, as I was writing this, I received an email from my mom, who is very distressed about a plot development with Finnick. I CAN SAY NO MORE. Actually, I probably could, seeing as you've already read it.
