Berkeleyside brings us word of a terrific program that matches dogs and kids in double trouble cuteness. Even better, it's double trouble cuteness with the intent of fostering literacy. Our liberal hearts just increased in size about five times; this is our catnip.
The pups are part of the Paws to Read program:
Paws to Read is a great way for children to practice oral fluency, spend time with a friendly dog, and have fun. The goal is to help build a child's self-esteem and confidence, as well as foster a fondness for reading. The program has met with success in other bay area communities.
This is surely happening in many communities across the nation, and it's fur-tastic (?) and woof-nderful (?). I'm fully supportive; my dog makes the best reading pillow. There's nothing like resting your head on a chubby bag of fleas and diving into a good book.
