Yao Defen, World's Tallest Woman, Dead at 40S

This is really sad. Seriously, if you don't want to cry today, you should move on right now. You have been warned. We are starting the day with some Sad.

Yao Defen, the world's tallest woman at 7 foot 8 inches, died at her home in China's Anhui Province. Cause of death wasn't named but it's known that Yao suffered from gigantism, with a tumor on her pituitary gland disrupting her levels of growth hormone.

According to Shanghaiist:

As an adult, Yao weighed more than 30 stone and had trouble walking. Though there was hope for a time that she would be able to have a successful career as a basketball player, the exertion of carrying her massive frame was too much for her heart and lungs to take. For a time Yao found work in a circus freak show which toured the country, but was reportedly subject to abuse and ridicule by the circus owners, she left the circus in 2004.

That breaks my heart. Annnnd, it gets even sadder: After Yao died, her mom reportedly cried until she passed out, only then were relatives able to take Yao's corpse away.

I guess there's some comfort in the fact that she had a loving family; we should all be so lucky in that respect. RIP, Yao Defen.
