Super Mayor Cory Booker Starts Food Stamp Challenge, Already Missing CoffeeLaura Beck12/04/12 11:45pmFiled to: Cory Bookerfood stampsFoodFood justicePovertytweetFb292EditPromoteShare to KinjaToggle Conversation toolsGo to permalink Last month, Cory Booker announced that he'd be living off food stamps for a week, and today was his first day on the program. He has $29.78 for the week.AdvertisementMayor Booker is already experiencing the shock of relying on very little money to sustain himself. His biggest issues so far are fairly common — not scheduling his time strategically enough, not taking into consideration where he can and cannot shop, and, perhaps most importantly, learning about sacrifice. He writes, "I am unable to afford coffee or other caffeinated beverages on the SNAP budget. I cannot remember the last time I started the day without a cup of coffee." This might sound like a small thing to some people, but it's not. I relate to this, as someone who's been on food stamps, and someone who works evenings, the thought of not having caffeine to get me through a late shift is fairly unbearable. And yet, for many, that reality is the least of their problems.Of course, Booker's stint on food stamps doesn't capture what it's really like to rely on food stamps — choosing to do something is very different from being forced to do it, and also, he has more resources than the average bear. But, it's an interesting exercise, one that's sure to be eye-opening for many, and so for that, Cory Booker maintains his status as one of our favorite imaginary boyfriends.
