Mittbot Romney Cannot Compute that Gay People Have Families

Not sure what they were teaching kids at Cranbrook when Romney was a student, but if any of the curriculum included the lesson "gay people are people, too," Mitt Romney must not have been paying attention. During his time as Governor of Massachusetts, he displayed a truly shocking amount of callousness to gay families, once remarking that he didn't know that gay families existed. Another woman who was unable to marry her partner and the mother of her daughter recalled that the governor was "robotic" and without feeling. Mitt Romney: he's a robo-jerk!

According to ThinkProgress, Romney got busy with the homophobia when he became governor of Massachusetts — from firing two state employees after they married their same sex partners to blocking an anti-bullying handbook because it contained icky words like "transgender."

But one meeting with two gay marriage activists stands out as particularly callous.

At one point, Romney remarked, "I didn't know you had families." Goodridge recalls her final exchange with the governor, which proved to her that he had "no capacity for empathy":

GOODRIDGE: Governor Romney, tell me - what would you suggest I say to my 8 year-old daughter about why her mommy and her ma can't get married because you, the governor of her state, are going to block our marriage?
ROMNEY: I don't really care what you tell your adopted daughter. Why don't you just tell her the same thing you've been telling her the last eight years.

Romney described the meeting to the press as "pleasant," as Goodridge cried.

This must have been before the software update that taught him how to love.

While Mitt Romney was honing his homophobe skills in public, his huggable wife Ann must be of the independent study, stay-at-home bigot variety. How else could she explain the fact that she's been booked to speak at the Values Voters Summit, a political event sponsored by the Family Research Council, American Family Association and Liberty Counsel — three groups the Southern Poverty Law Center designates as anti-gay hate groups? But wait! There's more!

Ann will share the stage with Mat Staver, an anti-gay activist who has praised Ugandan laws allowing the execution of homosexuals, according to Right Wing Watch. The summit takes place this weekend. I will give someone a whole sleeve of Thin Mints in exchange for infiltrating.
