Drinking Alcohol and Energy Drinks Leads to Casual Sex, Says Official Institute of No DuhS

Breaking news for anyone who has never tried alcohol or energy drinks, been to a bar or heard of sex before: A recent study by the nerds at the the University at Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions has revealed that consuming alcohol with energy drinks (AmEDs) such as Red Bull can lead to more casual and risky sex. According to Kathleen E. Miller, one of the study's authors, AmEDs, when mixed with booze, could be a contributing factor to the "hook-up culture" prevalent on so many college campuses. (Other factors include: college campuses.)

Says Miller:

"Mixing energy drinks with alcohol can lead to unintentional overdrinking, because the caffeine makes it harder to assess your own level of intoxication. AmEDs have stronger priming effects than alcohol alone. In other words, they increase the craving for another drink, so that you end up drinking more overall."

She also adds that, while the coupling of AmEDs and alcohol will not necessarily lead to casual sexual encounters (phew), it does increase the risk of them happening. On the bright-ish side, the combination of factors appears to have no effect on whether the bone-zone participants are having protected sex:

Regardless of their AmED use, participants in the study were more likely to use a condom during sex with a casual partner than during sex with a steady partner, consistent with previous research.

The study is a part of a larger project being funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), though it seems like a lot of money could be saved by simply going to college bars and asking the dumbest-looking people in the room why they are drinking a 5-Hour Energy mixed with a flagon of Evan Williams. Chances are you'll get a lot less "this was my grandfather's drink" and a lot more "TOO GET FUH-HUCKED UP AND GET FUHHHCKED!"
