Happening now in Houston: A new $5 "sin tax" on strip clubs — called a "pole tax" — is expected to generate over $1 million in revenue for the city, and the cash will be used to help the city process rape kits. According to ABC News, Houston has an estimated 4,000-6,000 rape kits that have remained untested because of limited resources. Pretty smart to use money from folks who enjoy sexualized women to aid sexually assaulted women. Thank yous and kudos to City Council member Ellen Cohen, who promoted the tax, and says:
We lose sight of the fact that those are people. Between four and six thousand people who have been sexually assaulted went through one of the worst things you can go through. The indignity of a rape kit is not 10 minutes behind a screen; it's a long, laborious, embarrassing procedure.
