My Little Comments: Friendship Is Magic

Hello! Good morning! It's okay, don't bother trying to say hello back — you can't. We've turned off comments.

But I only read this site for the comments!

Oh. Maybe we should just stop writing then? HA. C'mon. You can't get rid of us.

Gawker Media's new commenting system, the latest — and far more user-friendly — version of which you may have seen launch yesterday on Gawker and Deadspin (check out any post over there to see how it looks), will be coming to Jezebel tomorrow. We're calling it Kinja. No, I don't know what that word means; I think our dear publisher Nick Denton just made it up. (He does that sometimes. What the hell is a "jalopnik" or a "deadspin"?)

I know, I know: You've seen the new commenting system and you hate it! Or you've not even seen it and you still hate it! Yeah, I know your type. My only response is one of tough love: It's happening here and all you can do is roll with the punches and adapt (or flounce, but I hope you choose the former).

So Kinja will be here bright and early tomorrow morning and in anticipation of this major change, we're going to take a breather today. No comments. And come tomorrow, it's Day Zero. There will be no stars, and the cliquish echo chamber that too often dominated the old system is done. In its place will be a space for actual dialogue. You'll still have hearts, but the larger commenter hierarchy is a thing of the past. The future will be more of a meritocracy. Consider today's silence a palate cleanser before we move forward.

But I only read this site for the comments!

Yeah, I've heard. And I promise that they will be back tomorrow, albeit in a different form — a form that, once everyone gets their sea legs, we genuinely think will be better. I hope that eventually you'll agree. If you could see me right now, you'd see a bright and shiny future sparkling in my bloodshot eyes. And my pupils are super dilated with hope.

In the meantime, enjoy the peace and quiet. Just think of all the work you're going to get done today!
