Batshit Birther Orly Taitz's Run for Senate Fails Spectacularly

Remember Orly Taitz? She's awesomely terrible for a number of reasons. First, her names ORLY, like the thing the incredulous owl on the internets say whilst tilting their heads adorably sideways. Second, she's a birther. The queen birther, maybe, who is famous only for her incredible ability to insist that Barack Obama is Kenyan in the face of overwhelming evidence that suggests otherwise. Third, she's so undeterred by facts and reality that despite her whackadoo views, she thought it might be a good idea to run for Senate against Diane Feinstein. And thanks to an experimental new primary system in the state of California, she almost fucking did it. Democracy is hilarious.

California's trying out a new way of choosing candidates this time around — rather than forcing candidates to advance through single-party primaries in order to qualify to run in the general election, the state's having all of the candidates run against each other in a madcap dash for the first and second highest number of votes overall. In theory, this process would weed out the sort of extremists sometimes selected by single party primaries; in practice, until yesterday, it was a very real possibility that Orly Taitz could have made it to a general election showdown with the longstanding Democrat Feinstein.

Here's how that would have worked: Senator Feinstein was far and away the preferred candidate among primary voters. Trailing her was a motley crew of several Republicans, including Taitz. As of Monday, some polls were showing that Taitz was the queen of the single digiters and thus poised to come in second.

But her dreams didn't pan out. Even though she told TPM that she had 800 new Twitter followers which showed that people were totally psyched about her, she ended up coming in 5th and being knocked out of contention for the general election. It's a shame; I love this woman. I want her and Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin to form a Tenacious Losers Trio.

Even though her ridiculousness is incredibly entertaining, let's not forget that even though she lost handily, she still managed to convince 113,000 Californians to vote for her — and there's no way that all of them were hipsters voting ironically. This is a woman who has compared herself to Nelson Mandela, obliquely implied that Barack Obama's church is murdering homosexuals, and accused the administration of building internment camps for Anti Obama dissidents. A choice quote from Ms. Taitz:

I believe [Obama] is the most dangerous thing one can imagine, in that he represents radical communism and radical Islam: He was born and raised in radical Islam, all of his associations are with radical Islam, and he was groomed in the environment of the dirty Chicago mafia. Can there be anything scarier than that?"

I can think of two words much scarier than that paranoid birther bedtime story: Senator Taitz.
