Lolo Jones is a 29 year-old track and field star who has won several national titles, competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is favored to win at this year's Summer Olympic Games in London. But, really, who gives a fuck about all of these athletic accomplishments. You know why? Lolo Jones is also a virgin.
During an recent interview with HBO's Real Sports, Jones told Mary Carillo that she is abstaining from sex until marriage, saying, "It's just something, a gift that I want to give to my husband, but please understand this journey has been hard. If there's virgins out there, I just want to let them know, it's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. Harder than training for the Olympics, harder than graduating from college, has been to stay a virgin before marriage."
Well, no wonder it's all anyone can talk about — staying a virgin is harder than being an Olympian. Okay, sure. And the challenge is only greater when you, as the media feels the need to constantly point out about Jones, are hot. Let's give her all the gold medals and call it a day.
This is not a criticism of Jones' choice not to have sex. It goes without saying that the right to make that choice is entirely hers and being a virgin should not be stigmatized. Why should anyone care what she does especially when her actions effect no one but herself? Sadly, however, people do care and now it's all anyone can talk about.
Jones herself says she'd rather not discuss it, saying, "I hate talking about it, but hate people saying they can't understand why I've been single so long."
Why are people harassing Jones, an incredible Olympic athlete, about her sex life to begin with? This old school mentality that a woman's sexuality is inherently intertwined with all of her accomplishments is tired and, quite frankly, bullshit. Worst still, it's a lose-lose. Had Jones had several sexual partners, GMA and the Today Show would still be drooling and gnashing their teeth over her, ignoring the main point: She, a woman who can run the 100m in less than 12 seconds, is headed to the Olympics in London where she is projected to win.
In the end, a person not having sex is a boring news item. A person having sex is a boring news item. Practically any human on Earth can do either of those things. You know what any human can't do? Be an Olympic athlete.
