You know how Channing Tatum was in approximately one zillion movies this year? Next year belongs to Kristen Wiig. Saturday marked Wiig's final performance as a Saturday Night Live castmember, but she has plenty of work ahead of her: She's in six movies to be released between now and 2014.
In Imogene, Wiig plays a playwright who stages a suicide in an attempt to win back her ex, only to wind up in the custody of her gambling-addict mother. (Darren Criss and Natasha Lyonne are also in that one.) The Secret Life of Walter Mitty has Ben Stiller in it; Freezing People Is Easy pairs KWiig with Paul Rudd; and in The Comedian Wiig teams up with Robert De Niro — he plays an aging insult comic. Wiig will also provide voices for characters in Despicable Me 2 and How to Train Your Dragon 2 . It's interesting that, despite the runaway success of Bridesmaids, none of the planned projects pair Wiig up with another woman. It would be fun to see her work with Amy Poehler, Retta, or Mindy Kaling. The exciting news that Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are teaming up for a buddy cop movie is also a reminder of how few flicks have two female leads. On the other hand, hooray for a 38-year-old woman finding success and work in youth-obsessed Hollywoodland. Plus, Wiig is going to be working with some great people, and none of these flicks sound anywhere near as bad as some of the other movies made by SNL alums — Deuce Bigalow or Corky Romano, anyone?
