This week, the father who blogs at "Adult Onset Atheist" got a phone call that his 14-year-old daughter had been sent to the principal's office, a punishment that meant she had to miss at least one class period and wait in an office with large windows, on display to all of her peers who would know she was in big trouble.
What was her crime? Dressing inappropriately. What was she wearing? This:
"I was shocked at my ineptitude," AOC wrote. "The outfit actually looked appropriate to me; especially given the fact that it was 86F ( 30C) and the AC in the junior high was not working well outside of the front office. How could I be so blind as to not see that [my daughter] was dressed as a harlot, and presented a danger to all the boys in the school?"
It turns out that the principal himself had identified his daughter as "inappropriately dressed" at lunchtime — apparently, the hem of her skirt was ½ an inch too high. But to her father, who wrote that other students at the school have higher hems on their skirts and pants, his daughter was being singled out for being a "provocative female," which is obviously beyond her control. Wow, that's fucked up.
But hey, at least her father, who brought her "some dungarees and a sack-like shirt" to change into, has an awesome sense of humor. "What does it say to the teachers who had her in class earlier in the day, and not noticed her inappropriate dress?" AOC wondered. "Will there be punitive actions taken against the teachers who could not look at my daughter with perversion in their eyes?"
