The Best Time to Get Accidentally Pregnant is When You're Young and CarefreeS

Imagine for a moment that you're in your twenties — you're young, probably in the best shape of your life, happy, healthy, unmarried, and the world is your oyster. According to new research, now would be the perfect time to get accidentally pregnant.

Record scratch sound! But wait! Everything was perfect! You were enjoying being young and having fun and learning your way in the world!

According to Guttmacher, the US is already rotten with unplanned pregnancies compared to the rest of the industrialized world, and even though rates of teen pregnancy have taken a nosedive in recent years, one group of ladies just can't seem to stop getting accidentally knocked up — unmarried women in their twenties. More than two-thirds of pregnancies among single women in their twenties are unintended, and three quarters of pregnancies among unmarried women between ages 20 and 24 were unintended. Non-hispanic black women in their twenties had a higher rate of unintended pregnancy than their white and Hispanic counterparts, and as a woman's level of education increased, the likelihood that she'd become unintentionally pregnant in her twenties decreased.

Guttmacher researchers point to these findings as more evidence that availability of contraception is important to improving women's quality of life. The idea that giving women the freedom to plan the size of their family and the timing of the births of their children is beneficial is a little Department of Duh, but in a year that has seen the revival of a debate that's been settled for half a century, it bears repeating.
