EU foreign ministers have imposed sanctions on the wife and other close relatives of Syrian President Bashar Assad, freezing their assets and prohibiting them from traveling to Europe. Maybe first lady Asma Assad will take this respite from ordering ming vases and handcrafted bedside tables online as an opportunity to reflect on the 8,000 people who have been killed in Syria over the past year — the sanctions are part of a continuing attempt to stop the ongoing brutal violence. However, since she was born in the U.K., she can probably still travel there — and we know she likes to shop in Chelsea.
