Reverend Links Condoms to Date RapeS

Callie Otto, the founder of Catholic Students for Choice, the group that's been trying to covertly distribute condoms at the Catholic University of America, sent us the below excerpt from an article that a CUA journalism student wrote for class. Looks like the reporter has a future in eliciting shocking quotes from crazy people, because she got Reverend Jude DeAngelo to say on the record that condoms cause date rape. From her piece (which is not available online):

Reverend Jude DeAngelo describes Otto's efforts to help fellow students as "evil."

"Catholic University stands for the mission of the Church. I'm not sure why it's incumbent on people to protest publicly the University when you know what the University is," said DeAngelo. The balding and bearded priest described the "great grief" Otto and her group cause him.

"To me the issue is that we have young people who think they are doing good for others by handing out condoms. There are many instances of date rape in which the assailant uses a condom. I would hate to think that the condom they receive from this group somehow entitles them to...[do this]," said DeAngelo.

DeAngelo is the Director of Campus Ministry at CUA, which means that thousands of students look up to this man. Can you imagine going to him for help? "Father, I think I was date raped." "Well, my child, did you use a condom? If so, that's your bad!" As we've said before, it's hard to imagine how CUA polices sexual assault if they refuse to accept that sex, consensual or otherwise, takes place on campus. University officials should be penalized for spreading misleading "advice," well-meaning or otherwise. Doesn't public health ever trump "religious freedom"?
