Invisible Children Requests, Then Declines Interview

We were very excited when Jedidiah Jenkins, the Director of Idea Development and Ideology for Invisible Children, emailed us last Friday night to say that he'd "LOVE" to discuss the Kony 2012 campaign further. We said we'd get back to him after the weekend, and subsequently proposed an unedited, snark-free Q&A session, which we thought they'd be into — after all, their new video asks viewers to tweet any questions they still have about the campaign! But, apparently they're only interested in questions that are shorter than 140 characters. Or maybe they figured we'd ask too many questions about their antigay creationist ties? We've published their emails instead, without comment.

and I'd LOVE to talk to you about IC, what we do with our money, how we spend it, what we prioritize. I can't promise I'll change your mind... but I'd at least like to turn your speculation into first person analysis.

my phone number is XXX-XXX-XXXX and this is my email. And I KNOW jason is excited to talk with you.

Much love.

Hi,
Thanks for getting in touch. I'd definitely like to talk to you both. Let me talk to my editor over the weekend and see what she has in mind and get back to you?

Best,
Katie

Awesome! Just let me know. Very excited to talk. Feel free to call me any time to begin the convo. Your passion and fight against hypocrasy are so important, and I hope to show you how misguided you are about us and Jason but maintain your belief and strength in fighting for what's right!

But all I'll be is honest, so I'm all yours. :)

Hi,

Sorry it took me a few days to get back to you - I wanted to watch your second video before we discussed further. Now that I've seen it, I'm wondering if you would be interested in doing a Q&A for the site. I'd ask Jezebel readers if they still had questions after watching your video, and select 10 or so to ask you guys. You could take some time to answer them and we'd post your unedited answers as a response. This would be a way for you to respond directly to our community. What do you think?

Best,
Katie

Hi - just called, but wanted to email again as well because would love to set up the Q&A while the story still has steam. Can you please let me know if you're interested? Thanks!

Best,
Katie

Hi Katie! So sorry I just missed your call. I'm so interested, but I guess we're currently focusing on producing just a few more pieces addressing criticisms from our own channels, and then moving on to implementation of specific steps of policy-related activism and on the ground work. There's been such a onslaught of discussion, it's overwhelming to tackle it all. I'll be in touch, and maybe we can follow up with a solid discussion in the near future. :)

I appreciate you reaching back out for a Q&A, because while I certainly respect criticism on our foreign policy decisions, attacks on our character or integrity are (i believe) just the result of misunderstanding and false speculation. The speculation and discussion are good, because it shows that you and your readers hate phonies and mismanaged money! That is so important to talk about and such an important standard to fight for! But I stand so firmly behind how we operate and manage money, both as an organization and as human beings, and I want to make sure that anyone open for a dialogue gets the chance to discuss and know us as we really are.

I so appreciated your call and email, and we'll be in touch.

blessings
xoxo
