Elegant Updos and Classy Coats at the Westminster Dog Show

Last night the 136th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show kicked off in New York. The show was first held in 1877, making it the second-longest continuously held sporting event in the U.S., second only to the Kentucky Derby. But like any high-profile event, we're mostly interested in how they looked. Let's take a look, shall we?

Above, Sophie, a Standard Poodle, pairs an elegant updo with a simple silver chain. As for the makeup, well, Sophie is planning on firing this fool toot suite.

A toy Manchester terrier named Cottage Lake's Bela Horizonte is dapper in black and brown. That penetrating gaze doesn't hurt, either.

Cappy, a German shepherd, is barely even trying. Would it kill him to add a hair bow or some Manolos? Cappy was victorious in the herding group, but he'll never make the best-dressed list.

Lafford Fly Me Too Farleysbane, a papillon, rocks a plush white coat with well-brushed tresses. Very pretty for a night out on the town!

This whippet looks kind of out of it. Someone hit the bar before the party. Smudged eyeliner, menacing snarl… Bitter drunks are the worst.

Banana Joe, an affenpinscher, obviously counts Pauly D among his hair idols. Also? Wearing all black is oh-so-sharp.

Manchester, a bulldog, sports a headwrap that might be a wee bit too casual for this event. But some folks just don't take red carpet galas seriously.

Phil, a Bichons Frise, had someone spend a helluva lot of time on his hair. Not a strand out of place! The monochromatic look is working for him… Very Tilda Swinton.

This golden retriever, named Chloe, proves that sometimes blondes don't have more fun. Or any fun. At all. She's got excellent posture, though.

There's always someone falling down on the red carpet. Sometimes it's Paz de la Huerta. This time it's Fifi, a doberman pinscher in desperate need of a cab.

Oof. This pharaoh hound is basically naked. Not to mention lying down, with her legs spread. Someone wants attention!

Mystic Ava Gardner, a shetland sheepdog, chose a pretty white fur collar and matching boots to go with her soft brown coat. The hair is a little wild, but then again, look at the characters she hangs around (especially on the left).

This redbone coonhound has a sumptuous, rich, glossy coat, but his name sounds racist, like Lady Antebellum, so let's move on.

Maddie, a Shetland Sheepdog from Louisiana, falls for the old "smell my fingers" routine. The big fur collar Maddie is wearing is cool, but it looks like she could use a deep conditioner.

Derek, a Standard Poodle, was using Lady Gaga's stylist back when she was still Stefani, okay? He is an original, often imitated, never duplicated. And if his manicurist doesn't show up in five seconds she will never work in this goddamn town again.
