Whitney Houston and Ray-J were spotted having dinner together last week in Los Angeles, fueling rumors that the 48-year-old Houston had been planning a comeback in the weeks leading up to her death yesterday afternoon. The BBC's David Willis explained that though some people close to Houston believed she was making a comeback, others feared that she'd "slipped back into old habits."
Ray-J, who was romantically linked to Houston as early as 2010, was interviewed this week on Insider about his love memoir Death of the Cheating Man. When pressed for information about his relationship with Houston, he responded,
You know, they blow this thing out of proportion. I mean, that's my friend. I've been knowing her for years and years and years, and she's a friend of the family. I have a lot of love for her and I have a lot of respect for her.
Thus far, Ray-J's Twitter account has been silent about Houston's death. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, Ray-J and Whitney Houston clashed at Kelly Price's pre-Grammy party on Thursday For the Love of R&B Grammy Party," at the Los Angeles nightclub Tru Hollywood. Houston was reportedly arguing with X-Factor finalist Stacy Francis when Ray-J intervened. A witness to the argument has said,
Whitney just got belligerent. Ray was trying to defend Stacy, telling Whitney, 'Stacy's family!', but Whitney was feeling crowded out and hands were raised.
"Hands were raised" meaning that fisticuffs were imminent. At any rate, there was no physical fighting, and though photos show Houston leaving the club looking pretty frazzled, friends have said that she was simply sweating from her performance.
Update: According to seemingly omniscient TMZ, Ray-J rushed to the Beverly Hilton when he heard of Houston's death, but was turned away by police.
