Remember how it's hard to tell the difference between British lad mags and rapists? Well, it's especially tough when said mags actually tell their readers to rape women. Which was apparently online mag UniLad's idea of a funny joke.
According to Huffington Post UK, a UniLad article called "Sexual Mathematics" included this gem:
If the girl you've taken for a drink [...] won't 'spread for your head', think about this mathematical statistic: 85% of rape cases go unreported.
That seems to be fairly good odds.
The author also added a disclaimer: "Uni Lad does not condone rape without saying 'surprise'." This "joke' is actually more bone-chilling than the usual hilarious rape quip, because it acknowledges that rape is an underreported problem (as opposed to claiming that bitches are just lying), and then cheers about that fact. The magazine removed the article in response to complaints, but on Twitter, it used its official account to ask one critic, "Are you a dyke?" When she replied, "Obviously you know you did wrong or you wouldn't have amended the article. You are not saving face by harrassing me," they responded, "the fact you're getting very defensive suggests you are one. It's all coming together now." Then they wrote, "We know we did wrong and it has been removed. That wasn't harassment, it was a question." Finally, someone with half a brain appeared to take the keyboard away, tweeting this apology:
We would like to make a public apology as it has come to our attention that one of the articles published on our site suggests we support non-consensual sex. [...]
Any flippant comments that may have been made during discussions, I also apologise for, it will not happen again. We are certainly going to be cleaning up our act on unilad.com. We do appreciate where you are coming from with your points, hence forth, an immediate change in material. Thank you, and sorry once again.
UniLad's entire site is currently down, with a message saying it "will be re-launching in a few weeks." Since the site previously favored articles like "How To Shag Your Lecturer" ("All university lecturers go into the profession with the knowledge that their fanny will be regularly filled with youthful meat! If there was an 'Are You A Slut Who Is Bored Of Your Husband's Wang? ' question on the job application form, every one would have a big juicy tick in the 'Yes' box."), it's hard to say what turning over a new leaf will really mean for them. But it's nice that some grownup finally explained to UniLad that their joke was unfunny and gross.
