In this season of cold weather and dry air, nosebleeds are not uncommon. Most of the time you can stop them simply by applying a little pressure to your nose, but in case you can't, here's an excellent-sounding new remedy: cured pork. Yes, apparently a new study has found that a method known as "nasal packing with strips of cured pork" was effective at stemming serious nosebleeds. Here is the horrifying description of what exactly was entailed:
Cured salted pork crafted as a nasal tampon and packed within the nasal vaults successfully stopped nasal hemorrhage promptly, effectively, and without sequelae.
Well, "nasal tampon" has to be the most disturbing phrase you've heard so far today. But, hey, it works! This is actually an old remedy for nosebleeds, but it fell out of favor because "packing with salt pork was fraught with bacterial and parasitic complications." You don't say? Speaking of which, it's not clear whether now, in the modern reincarnation of this cure, you can just jam any old cured pork up your nose, or if you have to buy some kind of specialized sterile cured pork. So I guess, as tempting as it is, it's probably best if consult a doctor before doing this and don't just go shoving any old piece of bacon into your nostrils.
