No, Fox News, Martin Luther King Jr Wasn't Anti-Abortion

Fox News is commemorating this Martin Luther King, Jr day by inviting his niece, Dr. Alveda King, to come and speak about his legacy. He was a conservative, she explained, who hated abortion. Except that isn't even close to true, not even the tiniest bit. Leave it to Fox News to wrap a crap sandwich in a lie and call it history.

Dr. Alveda King is so far to the right that she makes Ronald Reagan look like Che Guevara. She calls herself a "reformed murderer" because she had two abortions during her youth, and says gay marriage is akin to "genocide" because gay people getting married to each other is preventing children from being born from the unhappy fake marriages into which some of the gays would have presumably entered. When asked where her uncle would stand today (video here), she said,

You know, my uncle said, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,'" she explained. The negro cannot win if he's willing to sacrifice the futures of his children for immediate personal comfort and safety.' So that led me to say, a woman has a right to choose what she does with her body. The baby is not her body.

Uh, that's not right. Martin Luther King, Jr was in fact an advocate for reproductive choice for women and was one of the original recipients of The Margaret Sanger Award. During his acceptance speech, he expressed admiration for Sanger's life's work and a belief that life is made better for people who are able to control the sizes of their families.

There is scarcely anything more tragic in human life than a child who is not wanted. That which should be a blessing becomes a curse for parent and child. There is nothing inherent in the Negro mentality which creates this condition. Their poverty causes it. When Negroes have been able to ascend economically, statistics reveal they plan their families with even greater care than whites. Negroes of higher economic and educational status actually have fewer children than white families in the same circumstances.

He later went on to write that his Sanger award was among his prized possessions, but never mind any of those pesky "facts." According to Raw Story, Dr. Alveda King's been peddling her version of her uncle as a conservative, anti choice leader for years, and Fox News is trying to perpetuate it. And everyone knows that in this day and age, if you repeat something enough times, it becomes true.
