Older Ladies Aren't As Horny, And They're Fine With That

A new study finds that many ladies over 80 don't have a lot of sexual desire, but that doesn't really bother them — even if they're sexually active.

According to the LA Times, researchers surveyed over 800 women aged 40 to 100, living in a planned community in California. They found that the women under 55 and the ones over 80 were the most satisfied with their sex lives. But satisfaction didn't necessarily correlate to high desire. Study co-author Elizabeth Barrett-Connor tells ScienceDaily, "Approximately half of the women aged 80 years or more reported arousal, lubrication, and orgasm most of the time, but rarely reported sexual desire." And overall, "only 1 in 5 sexually active women reported high sexual desire." Explains Barrett-Connor, "In contrast with traditional linear model in which desire precedes sex, these results suggest that women engage in sexual activity for multiple reasons, which may include affirmation or sustenance of a relationship."

This doesn't mean ladies should ignore their low desire if it bothers them, and simply lie back and think of England. It does mean that for older women, something other than initial horniness may be contributing to good sex. The study authors do note that "emotional closeness during sex was associated with more frequent arousal, lubrication, and orgasm." And study author Susan Trompeter adds, "Those who were not sexually active may have achieved sexual satisfaction through touching, caressing, or other intimacies developed over the course of a long relationship." It appears that as women age, getting a raging ladyboner may be less important than having someone be nice to them, whether it's in the context of sex or not. Trompeter also has recommendations for future researchers and clinicians: "A more positive approach to female sexual health focusing on sexual satisfaction may be more beneficial to women than a focus limited to female sexual activity or dysfunction." Maybe when it comes to women's sexuality, we should be less concerned with what they're doing than with how they're feeling about it.
