GQ is revealing its picks for its annual "Men of the Year" issue one by one, and yesterday's announcement came with a little gender bending surprise: Kristen Wiig is the Bro of the Year! Yay! Women in comedy have finally arrived! Oh, wait, it's accompanied by a picture of Wiig in sexy black lingerie? I guess women have arrived, but their luggage got lost or something. Or they've arrived in one of those stress dreams where everyone else is wearing clothes except for them.
The write up accompanying the pictorial evidence that Wiig is indeed hot enough to chill with the bros fawns over her talent and hilarity; it was penned by the incomparable Jon Hamm. Hamm reflects on the non-fun involved in shooting the awkward Bridesmaids sex scene between Wiig and him, but also on her surprising shyness,
For a lot of comics, there's a persona they're not comfortable revealing unless they're performing. Kristen is incredibly shy; she has her hoodie pulled up and her sleeves pulled over her hands. But this is a woman who wore coconuts on her tits on SNL; she can go to the craziest, most grotesque places on the planet in character. Kristen came late to performing, and the way she rose through the ranks speaks both to her drive and to her wild talent.
Aw. Don't you just want to hug Jon Hamm?
It's great that Wiig's being recognized for her comedic contributions, but I have a dream that one day ladies can be considered ladybros without having to show their ladylumps.
Kristen Wiig is hilarious, and for all intents and purposes she's got a body that she's got no problem showing off and GQ is a magazine for straight men who like looking at ladies in their unmentionables, and, you know, fine. But naming Wiig "Bro of the Year" and then featuring her in a sexylady configuration poses questions that even Hamm's glowing writeup can't quell. For example: why is the bro of the year wearing even less clothing than Mila Kunis, GQ's Knockout of the Year? And why do none of the men who won awards feel compelled to pose in their skivvies? Maybe some of them have really enviable muscles? Is a ladybro simply a less hot but also less annoying to hang out with version of the knockout? Guess I have a lot to learn about the intricacies of the sacred path to brodom.
