Marina Abramović Is On Another Fashion Cover

Pop magazine tapped Serbian-born performance artist Marina Abramović as a cover star for its latest issue. Abramović made and dressed up a doll to look like herself during "The Artist Is Present," her landmark 2010 Museum of Modern Art show. The artist posed with the doll herself for one cover, and had Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen pose with it for a second.

There's also a limited-edition version of the issue, sold in hardback. That edition's cover features Abramović's face wearing vaguely Noh-inspired makeup, posed against a black background and shot upside-down.

For good measure, Pop also put out a fourth cover, this one destined, like the first two, for the newsstand. Very different in look and mood to the others, the photo shows a sort of Fragonard-style look at Georgia May Jagger, who appears with dark, bobbed hair.

Marina Abramović has appeared in fashion magazines before — she counts Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci as a friend, and spoke once in an interview of wanting to creative-direct a Givenchy show. She tends to lend her image to smaller, more esoteric fashion titles like i-D and V, but she has turned up on the cover of Elle Serbia, too. Abramović is also a contributor to the brand new first issue of Garage, the magazine that Dasha Zhukova founded. Zhukova used to edit Pop, which sort of brings this whole fashion/art ouroborous to its conclusion.
