Washington, D.C. has by far the highest per-capita rate of in vitro fertilization, followed by other parts of the Northeast. This and other fascinating facts come from an infographic compiled by Fertility Nation, drawing on CDC and census data. (Click to enlarge).

They note, "All of the top five and eight of the top ten states for IVF are located on the east coast (Washington D.C., Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Delaware)." The rates are of how many IVF cycles were started per 100,000 people; states with lower rates tended to be less dense, poorer, and perhaps more to the point, have fewer fertility clinics.

According to separate CDC figures, the average age of first time mothers increased 3.6 years from 1970 to 2006, from 21.4 to 25.0 years. And a third chart from 2002 shows a rough correlation with states with higher average ages of first birth and the IVF chart.
